The isthmus of land separating Lake Mendota from Lake Monona, around which Madison now sits, was envisioned as the site for Wisconsin’s state capital by Judge James Duane Doty in 1829, who purchased the land with personal funds, suggested a town named in honor of President Madison, designed a grid with streets named after the U.S. Constitution’s other signers, and presented his completed vision on paper to the Wisconsin Legislature. The Wisconsin Dells, anglicized from the French “dalles,” literally a gutter or rapids within in a steep-walled gorge, the incredibly beautiful area of rolling green hills and twisting country roads, where the Wisconsin River narrows into snaking rock passages and hundreds of small inlets around which a major resort area has grown, is about an hour’s drive west of Madison.
